the Hoople began his long and never quite illustrious career as guitar
roadie and occasional dep for trailblazing tribute act The Boogie Brothers,
taking him onto the biggest stages in London and across Europe before
he was 18. Firmly established at the dernier-garde of the UK music scene,
he went on to form cult indie rockers the Crystal Field (cult in this
case meaning that although no-one has heard of them, Matt has used Voodoo
rituals to convince many that they have).
A confirmed Luddite, Matt is immensely proud of the fact that most of
his gear predates the invention of the ZX Spectrum. “Even my strings
are old. I bought a job lot of Busted’s cast-offs – they’re
not exactly new, but they haven’t been used, have they?”
